Upcoming exhibition: Philippa Brück "How close they are to the starlit sky"

Philippa Brück, born in 1993, lives and works in Leipzig. From 2013 to 2017, she studied Theatre Painting at the Dresden University of Fine Arts. She subsequently continued her studies in Illustration, with a focus on Painting, at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences under Professor Christian Hahn.

Brück’s artistic practice unfolds in the space between figuration and abstraction, reality and imagination. Drawing on classical still-life painting, Baroque vanitas symbolism, and the visual traditions of theatre scenography, she conceives of the canvas as a stage. Organic forms, animals, plants, and symbolic motifs enter into dynamic relationships, forming carefully orchestrated scenes that oscillate between intimacy and spectacle.

Nature forms the starting point for her work: an emotional and psychological space of resonance in which memory, longing, intuition, and cultural conceptions overlap. At its core lies the relationship between humankind and nature. Flowers, animals, and landscapes become protagonists in visual narratives of transformation, transience, and renewal. Brück examines how personal experiences and cultural influences shape our perception of the natural world. Drawing on historical pictorial traditions, she reinterprets them from a contemporary perspective.

Her paintings are characterised by a fluid interplay of gesture, colour, and texture. Figurative elements emerge and recede until they lose their clarity, dissolving into abstract and at times surreal formations. Traditional painting techniques merge with the visual languages of the digital age.

The result is a series of immersive, subjective pictorial worlds that resist a single interpretation. Within them, ideas of transience, renewal, and change coalesce into a visual language that is at once sensuous and enigmatic.
