The martini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. We like to get it as an aperitif, before starting with more serious wines and dishes. Cocktail’s group shows by She BAM! bring together a mix of fancy ingredients like in a sweety cocktail, generating so a new contemporary vision of interdisciplinary artistic forms.
Like the martini itself, the title of the exhibition initially describes this appetizer, offering a foretaste of all the impressions that the exhibition intends to offer and simultaneously stimulating the centuries-long hunger for artistic practices based on the food topic. «Martini» is the third show of the series ‘Cocktail’. The dialogue between the seven artists, who are from different origins, backgrounds, and practices, is based on the fact of «eating» as a social event and on the concept of exchange. Far removed from traditional, staged, and romanticized still-lifes, the exhibition presents a display of artworks in which the focus is not on the procurement and processing of food, but focus explicitly on the social event, the abundance and the
celebration of our disturbing fascination and repulsion for food and its gross consumption. The exhibition creates a new version of the famous «tableau-pièges» by Daniel Spoerri which aesthetic principle is a confrontation of food artefacts as social. The «eye eats first». Martini is the taster, and the exhibition is the «suggestion du jour».
