A Place in the Sun is the first solo exhibition in Paris by French-German artist Dorothée Louise Recker (*1984, Norway). Galerie She BAM! is delighted to welcome visitors to its Paris pop-up space for a special weekend presentation.

Conceived as a site-specific installation, the exhibition brings together painting, sculpture, and photography within the setting of a bedroom. This intimate and private space serves as the point of departure for the project, becoming the pretext for the unfolding of an entire universe. Within this “interior,” reminiscent of a theatrical stage set, the scenography is articulated through the artist’s distinctive visual vocabulary: from oil paintings to sand objects, from the celestial evanescence of colour gradations to the tactile granularity of folds and volumes, from the diffuse light of painted surfaces to the contained darkness of drapery.

Is this her ideal bedroom, a desired or remembered place, a reminiscence? Has someone dreamed in these tangled sheets, eyes lost in the blur of the sky, left this bed at dawn or at dusk? At the end of what nocturnal dream, of what scorching afternoon nap? Visitors are free to form their own interpretations, invited to surrender themselves to the imagination at work here through the prism of their own sensory experiences. Yet certain clues remain, guiding their gaze. They lead, in particular, toward the sea and the sun—the landscapes in which Dorothée Louise Recker grew up and from which she draws her inspiration. Southward lies the course.

This Mediterranean world, luminous and sun-drenched, permeates her practice both formally and through the photographic archives that nourish it. These summer chronicles reveal not only brightness but also a shadowed counterpart, the reverse side of the zenith. Within the melancholic narrative of recurring summers, where time slips away like sand beneath one’s feet, a latent unease emerges, a seaside melancholy. Beneath the gentle warmth of beach-coloured hues, jellyfish sting in troubled waters; the languor of mid-August marks the hour when trees begin to die; and suddenly the brown smoke of a forest fire obscures the azure sky and devours the sun.

This is what Dorothée Louise calls the “heart of the heatwave”—a sensation she describes as belonging to the territory that is hers, both intimate and geographical. A landscape traversed and photographed countless times, whose visual narrative intertwines personal memory with collective references. Through her language as a painter and visual artist, through matter and colour, she offers an abstract expression of this territory. What is presented here is a bedroom with a view, a window opening onto a panorama through which she seeks to “define the horizon, draw the crossbeams and contours; to bring to light a distant nearness, so that it may be told and, for those who pause before it, become familiar.”
