Sarah Pschorn

Sarah Pschorn is a sculptor based in Leipzig. Born in Dresden in 1989, she grew up surrounded by Baroque architecture and discovered her passion for clay at an early age. After stays in the South of France and an internship in a Dresden pottery, she studied Sculpture/Ceramics at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle as well as Photography and Fine Art at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. In 2016 she opened her own studio in Leipzig and has exhibited internationally ever since. In 2023 she presented her largest solo exhibition to date, Records of Gravity, at the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus Bremen. Her works have received multiple awards, including the Monica Biserni Prize (MIC Faenza, 2023), an annual grant from Stiftung Kunstfonds (2022), and the Open to Art Award (Officine Saffi, Milan, 2019).

In her artistic practice, Sarah Pschorn creates three-dimensional collages from clay, porcelain, glass, and found objects. Clay and porcelain preserve spontaneous plastic gestures permanently through the firing process, while found materials often act as impulses for form. The vessel form becomes a symbolic carrier of thoughts and ideas, referencing art and cultural history, especially the Baroque. She herself sees her sculptures as a reinterpretation of Baroque showpieces. She applies ceramic glazes and lustres in multi-layered, painterly-gestural movements.
This results in shimmering surfaces that accumulate like sediments, lend depth, and create the impression of fleeting wetness. Sarah Pschorn stages her three-dimensional collages in expansive, often theatrical installations. Her work is a plea for the sweet and the sentimental, for the play between cheerfulness and melancholy, for losing oneself in form – while at the same time engaging with fragility and transience.
