Philippa Brück
Born in 1993, Philippa Brück lives and works in Leipzig, Germany. She studied Theatre Painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 2013 to 2017 before continuing her education in Illustration, with a focus on Painting, at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences under the mentorship of Professor Christian Hahn.
Brück’s artistic practice navigates the space between figuration and abstraction, drawing inspiration from classical still-life painting, Baroque vanitas imagery, and the rich visual traditions of theatre scenography. Influenced by her background in theatrical painting, she approaches the canvas as a stage on which organic forms, animals, plants, and symbolic motifs enter into dynamic relationships. Her compositions unfold as carefully orchestrated scenes that oscillate between reality and imagination, intimacy and spectacle.
At the heart of her work lies an exploration of nature as a site of both beauty and fragility. Flowers, animals, and landscapes become protagonists in visual narratives that reflect on transformation, mortality, and renewal. While referencing historical painting traditions, Brück reinterprets them through a distinctly contemporary lens, engaging with current questions surrounding ecology, perception, and humanity’s changing relationship to the natural world.
Her paintings are characterised by a fluid interplay of gesture, colour, and texture. Layers of representation dissolve into abstraction, allowing forms to emerge and recede, creating images that remain open to multiple readings. Balancing traditional painterly techniques with the visual sensibilities of the digital age, Brück constructs immersive pictorial spaces that invite viewers into an associative and emotionally resonant visual language.
Through her work, Philippa Brück explores the cyclical nature of existence and the constant process of becoming, offering poetic reflections on the interconnectedness of life, memory, and change.
