Peggy Pehl

Peggy Pehl follows a distinctive approach in her artistic practice. Born in Leipzig, her creative journey began early, shaped by the cultural upheavals of the 1990s in East Germany. These experiences deeply influenced her artistic development. She completed her studies in Fine Arts at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB) and was a master student under the guidance of J. Blank. Afterward, she spent several years in France and Canada, further solidifying her artistic language.

Pehl combines abstraction and figuration in a way that often integrates found objects and readymades into her works, which blend image, object, and installation. She considers herself an all-rounder, moving through various media and continuously engaging her art in a dialogue with space. Her works address themes such as identity and the human experience, with a particular focus on the fragility of memory and constant transformation. She often blends contemporary and historical elements, giving her works a distinct, time-transcending quality. Fragments of everyday life, such as "found footage" images or commonplace objects, become elements that evoke a "copy, transformation & paste" aesthetic.

Her installations are minimal yet immersive, frequently site-specific, transforming the exhibition space itself into an integral part of the artwork. The viewer is invited to engage with the themes of the works, often leaving with an intense experience that is only fully grasped once they leave the installation.

Pehl does not work in a permanent studio but creates her pieces spontaneously, wherever she happens to be. This working method emphasizes the authenticity and immediacy of her art. Over the years, she has exhibited her works in numerous solo and group shows in Germany, France, and internationally, with her art primarily shown in alternative spaces and institutions rather than commercial galleries.

Her works question existing perceptions and invite a critical dialogue that extends beyond personal narratives to engage with broader societal issues. In her artistic practice, she finds a balance between introspection and societal reflection. This balance has made her deeply appreciated for her thought-provoking works.
