Laura Sachs
Laura Sachs (*b. 1985, Darmstadt, Germany) studied Philosophy and Art at Goethe University Frankfurt before continuing her education at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2013. Rather than joining a painting class, she chose to study under the sculptors Hubert Kiecol and Gregor Schneider, graduating as Meisterschülerin with distinction in 2018. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at K21 – Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen and Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf. Laura Sachs lives and works in Berlin.
At the core of Sachs’s practice lies the question of what constitutes an image and how its individual components can remain distinct while still forming a coherent whole. Drawing on the legacies of Minimal Art, post-minimalism and the Bauhaus, she develops works that exist between painting and sculpture, challenging conventional notions of pictorial space.
Her objects extend beyond the flat surface of the canvas, incorporating edges, sides and reverse views as integral elements of the work. Through the use of metal structures, wooden supports and subtle spatial interventions, Sachs transforms paintings into physical objects that unfold in relation to the surrounding architecture. Their perception changes as viewers move around them, revealing shifting perspectives and spatial relationships.
Combining a reduced formal vocabulary with process-based experimentation, Sachs reconsiders the possibilities of monochrome painting. Oil paint is pressed through canvas, fabrics are reversed, and traces of dust and pigment from the studio become part of the work itself. These interventions generate a dynamic tension between control and chance, precision and material unpredictability.
By dissolving the boundaries between image, object and space, Laura Sachs creates works that invite a heightened awareness of materiality, perception and presence.
