Dorothée Louise Recker

Dorothée Louise Recker (*1984, Norway) grew up in the South of France in a family of horticulturists, surrounded by mimosa plantations and Mediterranean landscapes that continue to shape her artistic vision. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, she lived and worked in Berlin, exhibiting internationally in cities including Paris, New York, Berlin and Marseille. In 2018, she presented her first solo exhibition at a gallery in Leipzig’s Baumwollspinnerei, returning the following year for a four-month residency. Today, she lives and works between Berlin and the South of France.

Recker’s practice is rooted in a sensitive exploration of perception, memory and place. Her paintings draw from personal experience, natural phenomena and the coexistence of multiple cultural landscapes. Mediterranean light, Scandinavian winters and childhood memories merge into atmospheric compositions where horizons dissolve and spatial references become unstable.

Central to her work is an ongoing investigation of colour, gesture and materiality. Through layered gradients and subtle shifts in tone, she creates immersive pictorial spaces that oscillate between presence and disappearance. Repetition gradually dissolves the visible trace of the hand, yet the process always remains perceptible through slight imperfections and variations.

Alongside painting, Recker frequently incorporates sand, one of her preferred materials. Extending her research into the physicality of colour, sand introduces a tactile dimension that evokes both permanence and fragility. At once earthly and ephemeral, it recalls coastal landscapes, sunlight and the Mediterranean environment that lies at the heart of her visual imagination.

Through the encounter of colour, material and surface, Recker constructs immersive spaces that invite viewers into a sensory experience of perception, memory and landscape.
